Location: Aarey Colony, Goregaon, Mumbai
Initiated by: Debabrata Auro Foundation in collaboration with M. Tarun Diamonds
Program Duration: 2 Months
Focus Area: Sewing & Tailoring Skills for Financial Independence
Introduction
We’re thrilled to announce the successful completion of the Basic Sewing Machine Training Program at Aarey Colony, Goregaon—a transformative two-month journey of learning, growth, and empowerment under the WOW (Women Own Wings) Project. Spearheaded by the Debabrata Auro Foundation in partnership with M. Tarun Diamonds, this initiative aimed to provide women with essential skills in tailoring, while also nurturing their entrepreneurial mindset and financial independence.
👩🔧 8 women participated in the program—and their transformation has been nothing short of inspiring.
Journey of Learning and Transformation
Weeks 1–2: Building the Foundation
The program began with hands-on training in basic stitching using plain white cloth.
Women were introduced to:
- Sewing machine operations
- Straight, zigzag, and spiral stitching
- Geometric pattern exercises for hand control and precision
This foundation laid the groundwork for skill confidence and machine handling.
Weeks 3–4: Prototype Creation
Once foundational techniques were in place, participants advanced to prototype garments made from muslin cloth. Here, they:
- Drafted, cut, and assembled miniature frocks
- Practiced pleating, bodice-skirt joining, and sleeve attachments
This stage emphasized visualizing and constructing real garments in a scaled, controlled setting.
Weeks 5–7: Advanced Techniques & Real Fabric Work
The second month introduced:
- Advanced tailoring techniques
- Use of colorful, wearable fabrics
- Focus on aesthetics, finishing, and fit
Participants created traditional Indian garments like kurtis, salwars, and children’s frocks, gaining the ability to craft full-scale finished products.
Weeks 7–8: Skills Beyond Sewing
During these weeks, participants appeared for both written and practical examinations. The written exam tested their theoretical understanding, while the practical exam assessed their hands-on skills. These evaluations ensured that participants had thoroughly grasped the knowledge and techniques covered throughout the program.
The Impact
More than just a technical training program, the WOW Project has sparked transformation at a personal and community level. Women who once lacked access to vocational opportunities now:
- Demonstrate proficiency in both foundational and advanced stitching
- Confidently construct finished garments
- Envision launching their own tailoring businesses
- Aspire to train other women in their localities
With each stitch, these women are weaving stronger futures—for themselves, their families, and their neighborhoods.
Conclusion
The WOW Project stands as a shining example of how thoughtful, structured skill development can ignite lasting change. With continued mentorship and support, these eight women are on their way to becoming role models and changemakers.
