Greening Mumbai: DAF’s Tree Plantation & Beach Cleanup Drives

Trees and oceans are the heart and soul of Mumbai, but as the city has raced towards high skylines, the ground beneath has suffered the consequences. Mumbai is the financial hub of the country, but it is also paying the cost of urbanization with a changing climate because of environmental degradation.

The environmental toll has been palpable in the recent years. Debabrata Auro Foundation has taken the much-needed initiative to relieve the green spaces and choked coastlines and is scripting the story of hope, one tree and one shoreline at a time. Top NGO in India, DAF has taken the initiatives with their flagship Tree Plantation and Beach Clean Up Drives across Mumbai for ecological revival.

The transformative force of these drives is fuelled by volunteerism and backed by purpose-driven partnerships helping restore balance and revive the green lungs of the bustling city of Mumbai. Ranked among the top 10 genuine NGOs in Mumbai 2025, DAF is not just cleaning up the mangroves and beaches; it is inviting volunteers and eco-conscious corporates and donors and CSR-driven partners to collaborate, contribute and co-create a sustainable future. All activities involve communities and students to reclaim the beaches, rejuvenate mangroves, and spread a strong message of environmental consciousness.

Environmental Urgency in Mumbai: Why it needs attention?

The intensifying heatwave, urban flooding every year and the shrinking biodiversity is a waring of a multi-pronged ecological crisis.

  • The urban tree cover had declined by over 200% in the last ten years
  • Marine waste such as plastic is choking the marine life and polluting the beaches
  • Mumbai of today is 4–6°C warner than it was before

DAF’s tree plantation drive: Rooting for the future

Aimed at reclaiming the green cover, DAF’s tree plantation drive in and around Mumbai, and its schools, slums, and tribal belts are the perfect blend of afforestation, education, and awareness with the aim of cultivating environmental ownership.

Key projects

  1. Green Aarey Drive (January 5, 2024)

Joint effort with Shri MMP Shah College NSS and Jai Hindi College Rotaract Club with 40 volunteers planting trees at Aarey Colony.

28 saplings were planted to increase the green canopy cover. They consisted of a diverse tree species including Tulsi, Guava, Custard Apple, Neem, Kokam, and Amla. The event also included training the participants for post-plantation tree care. The event aimed to ensure long-term ecological balance and carbon sequestration.

  1. Sustainable Plantation with Organic Practices (November 24, 2023)
